Tight binding, spine browned, a semi-circular stain on the cover, but otherwise a nice and clean copy of this very rare edition.*

The Hobbit. HoughtonMifflin, 1938

1st edition!
First edition, first printing. With the bowing hobbit on the cover and on the title page. With the b&w and colour illustrations. Dustjacket missing. Antiquarian: very good condition. Somewhat weak binding, cover browned and spotted. On the spine the residue of two labels. This is a ex-library copy from the Hudson Public Library in Wisconsin. Their blind impression is in the topright corner of the title page (hardly noticeable) and in the back is the jacket with the library card still in it. Clearly not a popular book in Hudson, for in the six year it was in the library, it was only checked out 13 times, the last time on February 11, 1944... A nice copy of this very rare edition, wich no doubt will be even more soughtafter as soon as The Hobbit movie comes out.*

The Hobbit. A&U, 1942 (rebound)

George Allen & Uwin, 1942. A rare copy of the war time edition of The Hobbit, with just 1500 copies printed. This is an ex-library copy, from the Public Library of Warwich (as indicated with a small stamp on a flyleaf). That is probably why this copy has been rebound, in brown leather, with name and titel in gold. The book block has been trimmed, making the margins smaller. Both maps are now endpapers, while originally half of the maps were glued to the boards. Title page is missing. Illustrated by Tolkien in b&w and with a colour frontispiece ("The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the-water"). A nice copy of a rare edition.*

The Hobbit. A&U, 1954

George Allen & Unwin, 1954. This is the sixth impression of The Hobbit, the first reprint of the Second Edition. The book is illustrated by Tolkien in b&w and as a frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the-water" in colour by Tolkien. Antiquarian: fine condition.*
